Kisawa Sanctuary

Eight residences on Benguerra, printed from sand, on an island shared with villages.

Full entry · sources recorded · verification stamp pending

Kisawa occupies a stretch of Benguerra in the Bazaruto Archipelago off Mozambique, reached by helicopter from Vilanculos. Benguerra carries fishing villages and another lodge, which is why this register places Kisawa in the Extended Index: the island is shared, and the property's own material does not claim otherwise.

Eight residences of one to three bedrooms sit on three hundred hectares of dune and forest, each with a pool, a kitchen and a car. Parts of the buildings were made using three-dimensional printing with local sand and seawater, a construction method with no precedent at this scale in hospitality. The property funds the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies, a permanent ocean research facility on the island.

Printed from the island's own sand. The method is genuinely novel and was developed for this site rather than imported.

A research institute attached. The Bazaruto Center is a permanent facility rather than a resort programme, and it publishes.

Who it is not for

Kisawa is wrong for guests expecting an island to themselves, since Benguerra is inhabited and shared. It is wrong for travellers wanting a resort's communal facilities, as the model is residential. And it is wrong for those who need simple logistics. And it is wrong for guests who want a hotel rather than a set of houses. Those wanting exclusive use in the region should look at Jumeirah Thanda Island.
