Thanda Island
The independent years of a Tanzanian island, before Jumeirah took the name.
Thanda occupies a small island in the Shungi Mbili Island Marine Reserve off the Tanzanian coast, between Mafia Island and the mainland, reached by helicopter or boat. It was bought and developed by the Swedish entrepreneurs Christin and Dan Olofsson, who built a single villa with two bandas and ran it as an independent whole-island rental with a conservation programme attached.
That chapter ended when the island came under Jumeirah management and began trading as Jumeirah Thanda Island, which is held as a separate record here. Nine bedrooms for up to eighteen guests, let only whole, all-inclusive: the shape of the product did not change, but the name and the operator did, and the register keeps both.
An owner-built island under an owner's name. For years Thanda was one of very few African whole-island rentals run independently of any hotel group.
A closed name, not a closed island. The villa, the reserve and the bandas are unchanged. What ended was the independent chapter.
