Cayo Espanto lies inside the Belize Barrier Reef, a few minutes by boat west of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. It is a small caye — a few acres — carrying one property and a dock that serves only its own guests. The mainland and San Pedro are close enough for a morning trip and far enough that nothing from either reaches the island.
Seven villas stand along the shore, several with private docks and plunge pools, and each is assigned a houseman who handles the day. There is no restaurant and no fixed mealtimes: the kitchen cooks to the guest and serves wherever they choose, which is the property's defining mechanic. The island is often taken whole for weddings and small groups, and diving on the barrier reef, the Blue Hole and the flats are all run from the dock.
No restaurant is a design decision, not a gap. Every meal is private by default. On an island of seven villas that removes the one moment where guests would otherwise have to see each other.

Cayo Espanto is wrong for travellers who want somewhere to walk to — the caye is a few acres and every departure is a boat. It is wrong for families wanting other children around, since seven villas rarely produce any. And it is wrong for guests who enjoy the social side of a resort: there is no bar, no communal table and no evening scene by design. Larger parties should look at Royal Belize; those wanting a resort at Ambergris should look to the mainland caye itself.
