Calala Island
A Caribbean island off Nicaragua for eight guests, reached by the owners' plane.
Calala lies in the Pearl Cays off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, reached by private aircraft from Managua and then boat. The island is small and low, ringed by reef, and holds one property and no other occupants. The Caribbean coast of Nicaragua sees very little tourism of any kind, which is part of the point.
Four suites take a maximum of eight guests, all-inclusive with a chef and a staff that outnumbers them several times over. The island can be booked by the suite or taken whole, and at eight guests the distinction is close to academic. Lobster fishing, the reef and doing nothing are the programme.
Eight guests is the ceiling. Small enough that one family fills the island, which makes the whole-island rate rational rather than aspirational.
A coast almost nobody visits. Nicaragua's Caribbean side has no tourism infrastructure to speak of, and the island exists entirely apart from it.
Who it is not for
Calala is wrong for groups larger than eight. It is wrong for travellers wanting facilities — there is no spa, no gym and one kitchen. And it is wrong for guests who need reliable connectivity or easy medical access, given the isolation. And it is wrong for guests who want a choice of restaurants or evening life. Those wanting Central American islands at greater scale should look at Islas Secas or Isla Palenque.
