Turneffe Island Resort stands at the southern tip of Turneffe Atoll, the largest of Belize's three coral atolls, about two and a half hours by boat from Belize City. The property occupies about twelve acres of a caye at the atoll's edge; the atoll itself is a marine reserve of flats, mangrove and reef.
Around twenty rooms and villas make up the accommodation, run all-inclusive around fishing and diving. The Elbow, at the atoll's southern point, is one of the best-known wall dives in the Caribbean, and the flats behind produce bonefish, permit and tarpon — the grand slam that draws anglers here specifically.

Who it is not for
Turneffe is wrong for guests who neither fish nor dive, since there is nothing else to fill a week. It is wrong for travellers wanting comfort or design, as the lodge is functional. And it is wrong for those who suffer on a long boat crossing. And it is wrong for guests who want a spa, a pool or evening entertainment. Those wanting Belizean comfort should look at Cayo Espanto or Coco Plum.
