Pangkil Private Island
An Indonesian island of thatched houses let whole, an hour from Singapore.
Pangkil is a small island off Bintan in the Riau archipelago of Indonesia, reached by ferry from Singapore to Bintan and then boat — under two hours door to door from one of Asia's largest cities, which is the island's practical argument. It is let to one party and holds nobody else.
The island carries a group of thatched houses built in traditional Riau style with local materials, sleeping around thirty guests, with a staff, a cook and boats. There is no air conditioning in the main buildings and no attempt at resort polish: the model is a barefoot family island rather than a hotel, and it is used heavily for weddings and family weeks.
Two hours from Singapore. Almost nothing else in this register can be reached from a major city in a morning, and it makes a whole-island let practical for a weekend.
Built in the local vernacular. Thatch, timber and open sides rather than glass and air conditioning, which is a genuine constraint as much as a style.
Who it is not for
Pangkil is wrong for guests who need air conditioning and modern comfort throughout. It is wrong for travellers wanting clear tropical water, since the Riau seas are warm and often murky. And it is wrong for small parties carrying the cost of a whole island. And it is wrong for guests who expect a spa, a gym or a choice of restaurants, none of which exists. Those wanting the same region at resort standards should look at Nikoi or Cempedak, both of them hotels rather than house parties.
