Gladden Private Island
One villa on a speck of the Belize Barrier Reef, and no second building anywhere on it.
Gladden is a small caye on the Belize Barrier Reef, about a forty-minute boat ride from Placencia, surrounded by water rather than by anything else. There is no village, no dock for visitors, no other structure. The island exists only as a setting for one house, and the reef around it is the reason the house is where it is.
The single villa is let all-inclusive to one party at a time, with a chef, a butler and a boat captain in attendance and a staff-to-guest ratio that is among the highest in the register. Meals, drinks, transfers and the use of the boat are included; nothing is shared, because nobody else is on the island at any point during the stay.
Gladden Spit is the address. The whale-shark aggregation site that gives the island its name lies nearby, and the spring full moons draw divers from across the Caribbean.
One house is the ceiling and the point. Where most exclusive-use islands scale to a group, Gladden does not scale at all — which makes it one of the few islands in the register that works properly for two people.
Who it is not for
Gladden is the wrong island for a group: the villa is small and there is no second building to expand into. It is wrong for anyone who wants variety in a week — one house, one beach, one reef, and the mainland is a boat ride each way. And it is wrong for guests who need shops, a spa, a gym or a change of restaurant. Larger parties wanting the same Belizean water should look at Royal Belize or Cayo Espanto.
