Fowl Cay lies in the Exumas of the Bahamas, reached by boat from Staniel Cay, and covers about fifty acres of low scrub and beach. One property occupies it and there are no other guests, no day traffic and no dock for visitors. The Exuma banks around it are shallow, clear and largely empty.
Six villas hold a maximum of around twenty-four guests, all-inclusive, and each villa comes with its own powerboat that guests take out unaccompanied — the property's defining arrangement. The swimming pigs at Big Major, the nurse sharks at Compass Cay and Thunderball Grotto are all within a short run.
A boat per villa, unaccompanied. Very few properties hand guests a powerboat and a chart. It converts a stay from a resort week into a cruising one.
Fifty acres for twenty-four people. The island empties completely when the boats go out, which is most mornings.
Who it is not for
Fowl Cay is wrong for guests who do not want to drive a boat, since it is the whole point. It is wrong for travellers wanting a restaurant, a spa or evening life. And it is wrong for those who need staff on call at all hours. Those wanting the Exumas served rather than self-driven should look at Musha Cay.
