Musha Cay
Five houses on a private cay, and forty more islands around it that come with the booking.
Musha Cay lies in the southern Exumas and is the residence at the centre of the Islands of Copperfield Bay — eleven private islands over about seven hundred acres, bought by David Copperfield from 2006. Arrival is by private aircraft to a nearby strip and then by boat. Guests have Musha and the run of the surrounding cays, with forty beaches between them.
Five houses stand on the island, twelve bedrooms holding up to twenty-four guests, and they are never let separately: the booking is the island. The staff numbers over thirty. Copperfield's own inventions are part of the stay — treasure hunts, a secret village, a goldfish race called the Musha 500 — and the boats and water toys are included in the rate.
Eleven islands, forty beaches. The register had carried forty islands, which was the beach count wearing the wrong noun. The group is eleven.
The entertainments are designed. Most whole-island rentals sell an empty island; this one sells an illusionist's staging of it, which is a different product and not to everyone's taste.
Who it is not for
Musha is the wrong island for a quiet couple: the scale, the staging and the rate all assume a full house of twenty-four. It is wrong for travellers who want understatement — the property is theatrical by design and does not apologise for it. And it is wrong for anyone who needs a spa and gym culture, or a resort's dining choice. Couples wanting the Bahamas should look at Fowl Cay or Kamalame Cay.
