Calivigny Island
A Grenadian island let to one party, with a staff of a hundred and a helicopter pad.
Calivigny lies off the south coast of Grenada, a few minutes by boat from the mainland or by helicopter from the airport. The island runs to about eighty acres of lawn, beach and planted garden, and it is let whole and only whole — there is no hotel operation, no reception and no possibility of booking a room. Nobody is on it but the party and the staff.
The island holds a beach house, a set of cottages and a main pavilion, taking around fifty guests in a hundred or so bedrooms depending on configuration, with a staff that outnumbers them. It is the Caribbean's best-known event island: weddings, birthdays and corporate weeks rather than quiet holidays, with tennis, water sports and a heliport built for arrivals at scale.
Built for the party, not the couple. The infrastructure — the pavilion, the heliport, the kitchens — is sized for an event, and the island reads oddly when it is half empty.
Grenada is minutes away. Unlike most exclusive-use islands, this one sits beside a real island with an international airport, which makes assembling fifty guests practical.
Who it is not for
Calivigny is wrong for a small group or a couple: the island is priced and staffed for scale and feels empty below it. It is wrong for travellers wanting remoteness, since Grenada is in sight and the airport is minutes away. And it is wrong for guests seeking a wild or natural island — this one is landscaped. Those wanting a small exclusive-use island in the region should look at Gladden or Royal Belize.
