Royal Belize occupies a small caye inside the Belize Barrier Reef, reached by boat from Placencia. The island carries three villas and nothing else; the staff quarters are on a separate islet nearby, so that once dinner is cleared the party has the island to itself in a literal sense. There is no village, no dock for visitors and no second property.
The three villas are let together to one party. The stay is all-inclusive, with a chef, a butler, a boat and guides, and the day is built around the reef — snorkelling, diving, fly-fishing the flats, and the mainland's jungle and Maya sites within reach by boat and road.
Staff housed off the island. Few properties do this. It is the difference between a private island and a private island with fourteen people living quietly behind the treeline.
Reef and jungle in one week. Belize is unusual in putting a barrier reef and Maya archaeology within a couple of hours of each other, and the island is provisioned to use both.
Who it is not for
Three villas make this the wrong island for a large party, and it is wrong for a couple, who will carry the cost of the whole island. It is wrong for travellers who want polish — this is a barefoot Caribbean property, not a design statement. And it is wrong for guests who need a spa, a gym or a choice of restaurants. Couples should look at Gladden or Cayo Espanto; groups wanting design should look to Banwa.
