Dunbar Rock
A single villa built on a rock off Guanaja, with the reef starting at the doorstep.
Dunbar Rock is a rock outcrop in the Bay Islands of Honduras, off Guanaja, reached by boat. There is no beach and almost no land: the building occupies the whole of it, rising straight from the water, and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef begins immediately below. This register holds it in the Extended Index rather than the main collection because the product is a dive lodge rather than a luxury resort, and the register should say so plainly.
The villa holds around eight rooms and is run all-inclusive around diving — walls, wrecks and reef within minutes by boat, with the house dive site at the base of the rock. Guanaja itself is a quiet island with little tourism, which is part of the appeal for divers and a limitation for everyone else.
The building is the island. Almost no property in this register occupies its entire landmass so completely. There is nowhere to walk to, and the rock ends at the walls.
Diving is the whole product. Meals, schedules and boats are organised around dive times, and a non-diving week here would be a long one.
Who it is not for
Dunbar Rock is wrong for non-divers, who will find nothing to do and nowhere to walk. It is wrong for guests wanting a beach, since there is none. And it is wrong for travellers expecting resort finishes and a spa — this is a well-run dive lodge in a striking position, and the register places it accordingly. Those wanting Caribbean diving with a resort behind it should look at Turneffe or Cayo Espanto.
