Mumbo Island Camp
Six tents on a Lake Malawi island inside a national park, with no electricity at all.
Mumbo is an uninhabited island in Lake Malawi National Park, about ten kilometres offshore from Cape Maclear, reached by kayak or boat. The lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds more freshwater fish species than any other lake on earth — cichlids in numbers and colours that make snorkelling here closer to a reef than a lake. The camp is the only structure on the island and the island is otherwise left alone.
Six walk-in tents on wooden platforms make up the camp, with bucket showers, composting toilets and no mains electricity. It is run under agreement with the national park by an operator that has held it for decades. Kayaking, snorkelling and doing nothing are the activities; there is no road, no shop and no signal.
No electricity, by design and by permit. The camp runs on solar and paraffin because the park allows nothing else, which produces a genuinely dark, quiet island.

Who it is not for
Mumbo is wrong for guests who need power, hot showers on demand and connectivity — none exists. It is wrong for travellers wanting comfort and service at the level of the rest of this register; it is a camp, honestly run and honestly priced. And it is wrong for anyone unwilling to reach an island by kayak or open boat. Those wanting African water with a lodge behind it should look at Chundu or Mnemba.
