Mustique
An island owned by the company of its homeowners, with about a hundred villas and one small hotel.
Mustique is a Grenadine island of about 1,400 acres owned by the Mustique Company, which is formed of the island's homeowners and controls building, access and development. It is not a resort island: it is a private community with roughly a hundred rental villas, a small hotel, a village, a school and a clinic. Day visitors arrive by yacht to the anchorage, which is why this register places it at P3 rather than P4.
The Cotton House holds seventeen rooms — the number that appears in most listings and the reason this island is routinely misfiled as a small hotel. The villas are the real inventory: individually owned, individually designed, let with their own staff of cook, butler and housekeeper. Basil's Bar on the water is the island's social centre, and the community's rules keep development capped.
Seventeen keys describe a hotel, not the island. Mustique's inventory is a hundred staffed private houses. Any comparison with a seventeen-room resort is a category error, and this register flags it as such.
Owners set the rules, not an operator. Building limits, access and the character of the island are decided by a company of homeowners, which is why fifty years have not turned it into a resort.
Who it is not for
Mustique is wrong for anyone expecting resort service: most guests are in private villas with their own staff and no front desk. It is wrong for travellers who want an island to themselves, since owners, staff and yacht visitors all share it. And it is wrong for those who want a single price for a stay, as villas, food and staff are arranged separately. Those wanting a resort in the Grenadines should look at Petit St. Vincent.
