Island Societies

A resort alongside private houses, under one system. 16 records, and the shelf exists because this is a genuinely different product that is routinely sold as though it were a resort. You arrive as a guest of a hotel and spend the week among people who live there — owners, their families, their staff — and the island's rules are set by them rather than by the operator.

The consequences are practical. The dining room may be shared with residents, as at Pine Cay, where thirty-seven homeowners have held the island jointly since the 1970s. The visible inventory changes through the year, because owners' houses are let when the owners are elsewhere: Mustique advertises seventeen hotel keys and has roughly a hundred rental villas behind them. The character of a stay depends on who else is in residence that month, which no brochure can tell you and no booking can guarantee.

What is gained is a place with continuity. These islands have had the same families on them for decades, the planting is mature, and nothing is being rebuilt to a new brand standard every seven years. Jumby Bay has run this way since the 1950s; Tresco has been leased by one family since 1834.

Wrong for guests who expect a resort's uniformity, and wrong for anyone who assumed a private island means the island is private to them. It is private to the community, and the guest is a visitor in it.
