Cape Fahn Hotel
A private island off Koh Samui with twenty-two pool villas and Thailand's mainland minutes away.
Cape Fahn occupies Koh Fan Noi, a small private island off the northern tip of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand, reached by boat in a few minutes. The island holds one property; the mainland of Samui, with its roads, restaurants and airport, is in sight. This is convenience rather than isolation and the register records it as such.
Twenty-two pool villas make up the hotel, contemporary in design rather than Thai vernacular, with views back to Samui and out to Koh Phangan. It is one of very few genuine private-island hotels in Thailand, a country with thousands of islands and almost no properties that hold one outright.
A private island within sight of a busy one. The arrangement is unusual in Thailand and gives guests both quiet and access.
Rare in its own country. Thailand's islands are mostly shared; a hotel holding one alone is close to a category of one here.
Who it is not for
Cape Fahn is wrong for guests seeking remoteness, since Samui is minutes away and visible. It is wrong for travellers wanting clear water, as the Gulf here is seasonal. And it is wrong for those expecting traditional Thai architecture. And it is wrong for travellers wanting a large resort's facilities at twenty-two villas, or a dive operation on site. Those wanting Thai island seclusion should look at Koh Munnork.
