Fregate lies east of Mahé in the Seychelles, about 200 hectares of granite, forest and seven beaches, reached by helicopter. One property occupies the whole island. Anse Victorin is regularly named among the best beaches in the world, and the island carries a free-roaming population of giant tortoises numbering in the hundreds — the result of a rewilding programme that has run for decades.
Seventeen villas stand across the island, each with a pool, placed far enough apart that guests rarely meet. The property has been through a full rebuild and returns to the market on the back of that work; this register carries it as Under Renovation until a reopening date is confirmed in writing. Its earlier operation is well documented and the physical island — beaches, forest, tortoises — is unchanged.
A rewilded island, not a landscaped one. The forest was replanted, the tortoises reintroduced and the invasive species removed over decades. The result reads as wild rather than gardened.
Seventeen villas across two hundred hectares is a density closer to a private estate than a resort, and the reason guests describe the island as empty.
Who it is not for
Fregate is wrong for anyone booking before the reopening date is confirmed — the register does not treat it as bookable. It is wrong for guests who want flat ground and short walks: the island is steep and buggies are how people move. And it is wrong for travellers who want a coral-atoll Seychelles of sandbanks and lagoons; this is granite, jungle and deep water. Those wanting the outer islands should look at Alphonse or Desroches.
