Constance Tsarabanjina
A Madagascan island of twenty-five bungalows, closed to the outside world by the sea.
Tsarabanjina is a small volcanic island in the Mitsio archipelago north of Nosy Be, Madagascar, reached by boat in about ninety minutes — a crossing that can be rough and that shapes access. The island is red rock and white sand with one property on it and no village. The surrounding archipelago is largely uninhabited.
Twenty-five bungalows sit along two beaches, built low in local materials, run by Constance Hotels on a largely all-inclusive basis. There is a dive centre and a small spa; there is no attempt at a large resort's range. Humpbacks pass the archipelago between July and September.
Volcanic rather than coral. Red rock, dark reefs and deep water immediately offshore — a different Indian Ocean from the atolls.
Ninety minutes of open sea. The crossing is the reason the island stays quiet and the reason some guests do not come back.
Who it is not for
Tsarabanjina is wrong for travellers who suffer at sea, given the crossing. It is wrong for guests expecting a resort's facilities at twenty-five bungalows. And it is wrong for those wanting reliable connectivity. And it is wrong for guests who want a spa culture or design-led rooms.
