Soneva Secret

Fourteen villas in an atoll with no other resort in it, at the far edge of the Maldives.

Full entry · sources recorded · verification stamp pending

Soneva Secret sits in Makunudhoo Atoll in the far north-west of the Maldives, a long seaplane flight or a private jet and boat from Malé. It is the only resort in the atoll — a claim almost no Maldivian property can make, since most atolls carry a dozen or more. The water around it has had close to no visitor pressure, and the surrounding islands are uninhabited.

Fourteen villas hold the island, several of them floating and able to be moved to a different position in the lagoon. The property runs on a 'barefoot butler' model with no fixed restaurant hours and no scheduled programme, and Soneva's environmental practice — waste processing, water, the carbon levy — applies here as at its older islands.

One resort in the whole atoll. In the Maldives this is the meaningful measure of remoteness, more than distance from Malé, and Secret is among the very few that can state it.

Villas that move. A floating villa repositioned in the lagoon changes the view and the light from one night to the next — an idea no other property in this register has built.

Who it is not for

Soneva Secret is wrong for a short trip: the transfer eats the better part of a day at each end. It is wrong for guests who want neighbours, a bar scene or a choice of restaurants, none of which exist at fourteen villas. And it is wrong for travellers who want the reassurance of a nearby hospital or airport. Those wanting Soneva with more around them should look at Soneva Fushi or Soneva Jani.
