Île des Deux Cocos sits in the Blue Bay Marine Park off the south-east coast of Mauritius, a few minutes by boat. The island is small, planted and carries a single colonial villa built in the 1920s by Sir Hesketh Bell, then governor, in a Moorish idiom that has nothing to do with the rest of the coast.
By day the island receives visitors from the mainland for lunch and snorkelling in the marine park; by night it is let to one party who have the villa and the island to themselves. This split is the record's central fact, and it is why the register does not describe this as an unqualified private island: privacy here begins in the evening.
Private after dark only. A whole-island let that shares its days with visitors is a distinct product, and the register records the difference rather than eliding it.
A 1920s governor's folly. The villa is a genuine period building in a coastline of modern resorts, and the reason to come is as much architectural as marine.
Who it is not for
Deux Cocos is wrong for guests expecting exclusivity through the day, since visitors come for lunch. It is wrong for parties larger than the villa holds. And it is wrong for travellers wanting remoteness, given the short crossing from a busy coast. And it is wrong for anyone expecting resort facilities on a single-villa island. Those wanting full-time exclusivity in the Indian Ocean should look at Jumeirah Thanda Island or Four Seasons Voavah.
