Ithaafushi — The Private Island (Waldorf Astoria)
Three villas on their own island, inside the largest private-island product Waldorf Astoria has built.
The Private Island sits a short boat ride from Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi in South Malé Atoll, and is a separate island rather than a wing of the resort. The parent property is large — around 120 villas across its own islands — which makes the contrast sharp: crossing the lagoon takes a guest from one of the biggest resorts in the atoll to an island with three buildings on it.
Those three villas hold three bedrooms in total and are let as one. The island has its own pool, gym, spa room, kitchen and staff, including a chef, a butler team and a personal trainer, and it runs on the party's schedule rather than the resort's. Guests keep access to the whole of Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi — its restaurants, its spa, its kids' club — which is the practical advantage of an island inside a resort.
The parent is the amenity. Three villas cannot justify eleven restaurants; a resort of 120 villas can. The Private Island borrows scale it does not have to house.
Built as a product, not converted. Unlike most island-within-resort offers, this was designed from the start as a separate island with its own infrastructure, and it shows in the plumbing as much as the interiors.
Who it is not for
Three bedrooms make this the wrong island for an extended family, and parties that overflow end up in the parent resort, where the privacy argument collapses. It is wrong for travellers seeking the wild Maldives — South Malé is developed water and the resort skyline is visible. And it is wrong for anyone who dislikes the sensation of a large resort humming just across the lagoon. For real distance, look at Voavah or Soneva Secret.
