Denis Private Island
A coral island in the Seychelles with its own farm, no reef, and a drop-off offshore.
Denis lies at the northern edge of the Seychelles bank, an hour by air from Mahé, on a coral island with a difference worth stating: there is no fringing reef. The bank drops away steeply just offshore, which makes the island a big-game fishing base rather than a snorkelling one. It is heavily wooded and one property occupies it.
Twenty-five cottages make up the accommodation, run on a largely self-sufficient basis — the island's farm supplies vegetables, eggs, milk and meat, which is unusual anywhere and rare in the Seychelles. There is no Wi-Fi in the rooms as a matter of policy. Turtles nest on the beaches and a conservation programme covers the island's endemic birds.

Who it is not for
Denis is wrong for guests who want a house reef to snorkel, since there is none. It is wrong for travellers needing connectivity in the room, which the property refuses. And it is wrong for those wanting the granite Seychelles landscape. And it is wrong for guests who want a spa complex and a choice of restaurants at twenty-five cottages. Those wanting reefs and granite should look at Cousine or North Island.
