North Island
Eleven villas on a granite island rewilded for a decade before the first guest arrived.
North Island lies in the inner Seychelles, forty minutes by helicopter from Mahé, a granite island of about 200 hectares with four beaches and a forested interior. One property occupies it; there is no village, no second hotel and no boat calling in. The island had been a coconut plantation, and the rats, cats and introduced palms that came with it had emptied it of almost everything native.
The rehabilitation came first. Invasive species were removed, the native forest replanted and Seychelles white-eyes and giant tortoises reintroduced across a programme that ran for years before the eleven villas opened. Those villas are built in timber, glass and salvaged wood at a scale closer to houses than hotel rooms, each with a butler and a plunge pool. There is no restaurant in the usual sense: the kitchen cooks to the guest, wherever they choose to eat. The island can be taken whole.
The rewilding preceded the resort. Anse d'Est and the interior were restored as conservation work, not as landscaping, and the bird and tortoise populations are monitored rather than displayed.
Eleven villas on two hundred hectares. The density is the product. A walk here rarely meets another guest, and the beaches are effectively private by arithmetic.
Who it is not for
North Island is wrong for families who need organised days: there is no children's club, no dive schedule and no activities desk, and the island improvises instead. It is wrong for guests who measure a property by its facilities, since there is one kitchen and no second restaurant to move to. And it is wrong for travellers unwilling to fly by helicopter, which is the practical way in. Those wanting the granite Seychelles at resort scale should look at Six Senses Zil Pasyon.
