Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge

Twelve bandas on a Tanzanian sandbank, rustic by design and modest by any standard.

Full entry · sources recorded · verification stamp pending

Lazy Lagoon occupies a private sandbank island off Bagamoyo on the Tanzanian mainland coast, reached by boat. The island is about a kilometre long, wooded in the middle with beach around the edge, and one lodge occupies it. Bagamoyo's old town, a former slave and caravan port, is a short drive from the mainland landing.

Twelve bandas make up the accommodation, built in thatch and local timber. This register places the property in the Extended Index: the format is rustic and the standard sits well below the rest of this collection, and readers comparing it with the Indian Ocean's better-known islands should know that before they arrive.

A private island at a modest price. Genuine exclusivity of land without the cost that usually accompanies it, which is rare enough to record.

Bagamoyo nearby. The mainland's history — the caravan route, the German colonial buildings — is within reach and is unusual context for a beach stay.

Who it is not for

Lazy Lagoon is wrong for guests expecting comfort or service at the level of this collection. It is wrong for travellers wanting clear water and reef, as the mainland coast here is turbid. And it is wrong for those needing air conditioning and connectivity. And it is wrong for guests who want a spa, a dive centre or a choice of restaurants. Those wanting Tanzanian islands at a higher level should look at Mnemba or LABA Fanjove.
