Raffles Udaipur

A private island in Udai Sagar lake, twenty-one acres of garden with a hotel on it.

Raffles Udaipur occupies a private island in Udai Sagar, a lake east of Udaipur in Rajasthan, reached by boat. The island runs to about twenty-one acres, most of it garden, and the hotel is built low around courtyards and water. It is a lake island rather than a sea one, and it sits at P2 in this register because the property is split: rooms stand on the island and a further set at Lakeshore on the mainland, which means the island inventory and the hotel inventory are not the same number.

The island holds 101 rooms and suites, most with private pools, with a further 36 at Lakeshore. Spa, restaurants and a butler service run to Raffles standard. The property opened recently and is one of the group's larger Indian houses.

One hundred and thirty-seven is not the island's number. The register records 101 on the island and 36 ashore separately, because a single figure would misdescribe both.

Rajasthan without the city. Udaipur's palaces are within reach by road and boat, while the island itself is quiet garden — a combination the lake-palace hotels inside the city cannot offer.

Who it is not for

Raffles Udaipur is wrong for guests wanting the famous Lake Pichola setting, which is a different lake and a different view. It is wrong for travellers seeking a small island retreat, since this is a large hotel. And it is wrong for those who want to walk into Udaipur in the evening. Those wanting a small lake island should look at Jicaro or Mumbo.
