Inland Waters

Rivers, lakes and estuaries. Islands that are not in the sea at all.

8 records, every one of them on the Heritage shelf, and not one of them in the sea. An island in the Zambezi above Victoria Falls, an island in a Kerala backwater, an island in an Irish river with a castle on it, an English tidal island reached by sea tractor.

The category exists because the register asks whether the island defines the experience, not whether the water around it is salt. On the Zambezi the answer is emphatic: Chundu sits in a river with hippos in it, upstream of the largest waterfall in the world, and no coastal property offers anything comparable.

What these islands share is that the water is a boundary rather than an amenity. Nobody swims. The crossing is the ritual — a boat, a causeway, a tide table — and the arrival is the product.
