Waterford Castle stands on an island in the River Suir in the south-east of Ireland, reached by a small chain ferry that the hotel operates and that runs all day. The island covers about 310 acres of woodland, parkland and golf course, and the hotel is the only thing on it. The castle itself has Norman origins with a Tudor and nineteenth-century house grown around it — stone, mullioned windows and a great hall.
Around nineteen rooms and suites are in the castle, with a further set of self-catering lodges across the island, which is why the register records a larger total than the castle alone suggests. There is an eighteen-hole golf course, archery and falconry, and the property works heavily as a wedding and event venue.
A ferry the hotel owns. Guests cross on a chain ferry operated by the property. It is short, unglamorous and the single thing that makes the island feel like one.
Castle and lodges are different products. The nineteen castle rooms and the self-catering lodges are separate propositions on the same island, and comparing the property to a nineteen-room hotel misreads it.
Who it is not for
Waterford Castle is wrong for guests seeking seclusion — the ferry runs constantly and events fill the calendar. It is wrong for travellers wanting a boutique hotel, since the lodges and the golf shape the atmosphere. And it is wrong for anyone expecting warm weather and water. Those wanting a quieter island castle should look at Mamula, or Eilean Shona for a Scottish equivalent.
