Mamula Island by Banyan Tree
An Austro-Hungarian sea fort in the Bay of Kotor, converted into a hotel over public objection.
Lastavica is a small island at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, occupied entirely by a circular stone fort built in the 1850s under Austro-Hungarian rule. The island is reached by boat. Its history is the difficult part and belongs in the entry: during the Italian occupation in the Second World War the fort was used as a prison camp, and its conversion into a hotel was publicly opposed by survivors' families and by campaigners in Montenegro and beyond.
The hotel occupies the fort itself — around thirty rooms and suites within the stone ring, with a courtyard, a pool cut into the rock and restaurants in the casemates. A memorial space to the camp's victims forms part of the site. It opened under Banyan Tree in 2023.
A fortress as the whole building. The hotel did not build on the island; it moved into the structure that already covered it, and the walls, gun galleries and courtyard are the architecture.
The history is unresolved, not settled. The register records both the conversion and the objection to it, because a guest is entitled to know before booking rather than after arriving.
Who it is not for
Mamula is wrong for travellers who would be uncomfortable staying in a building used as a wartime prison camp — that is a reasonable position and the register does not argue with it. It is wrong for guests wanting a beach, since the island is stone. And it is wrong for those seeking seclusion, given the busy summer waters of the Bay of Kotor.
