A Scottish country house on its own island, reached by an iron bridge from 1895.
Eriska is a 300-acre island in Loch Linnhe on the west coast of Scotland, near Oban, joined to the mainland by a Victorian iron bridge. One property occupies the island. Fallow deer come to the lawn at dusk, otters and seals work the shore, and the island has a golf course, walking trails and its own stretch of sea — the setting is Highland rather than tropical, and that is the point.
A Scots Baronial house of around thirty rooms holds the hotel, with suites and separate cottages, a spa and a swimming pool. The property was run by one family for decades and carries a country-house manner rather than a resort one: fires, dogs, dinner at a set hour. It has been a Relais & Châteaux member and trades on continuity rather than reinvention.
A bridge, not a boat. Eriska is a private island a guest can drive onto, which makes it one of the most accessible entries in this register and changes who can use it.
Scotland at close range. Glencoe, Mull and the west coast are within a morning, so the island works as a base rather than as a destination that swallows the week.
Who it is not for
Eriska is wrong for guests expecting warmth and swimming — this is the Scottish west coast, with rain and midges in season. It is wrong for travellers who want contemporary design, since the house is deliberately traditional. And it is wrong for anyone seeking remoteness, given the bridge and the road. Those wanting a genuinely cut-off British island should look at Burgh Island or Eilean Shona.
