Osea Island
An Essex tidal island reached by a causeway that the sea covers twice a day.
Osea lies in the Blackwater estuary in Essex, connected to the mainland by a Roman-era causeway that floods on every tide — for most of the day the island cannot be reached or left. It is privately owned and closed to the public. The estuary here is a birdwatching coast rather than a beach one: saltmarsh, mudflat and big skies.
The island carries a collection of cottages and a manor rather than a hotel, let for whole-island hire and used heavily for events, retreats and recording. This register holds it as Status Unverified: the ownership and the letting arrangements have changed more than once, and no current public inventory can be confirmed. Those wanting a British island with a hotel behind it should look at Burgh Island or Isle of Eriska.
