Naustholmen Adventure Island

A Norwegian island above the Arctic Circle run as a base for expeditions.

Full entry · sources recorded · verification stamp pending

Naustholmen lies off Steigen in Nordland, northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle, reached by boat. The island is small, rocky and treeless, holding a restored fishing station and nothing else. This register places it in the Extended Index because the product is an expedition base rather than a hotel, and the distinction shapes everything about a stay.

The station takes up to around eighteen guests in restored buildings, booked either as individuals joining a scheduled week or as a group taking the island. It is run by the Norwegian polar explorer Randi Skaug, and the programme is kayaking, skiing, climbing and sea fishing depending on the season rather than relaxation.

An expedition base, not a retreat. The island exists to launch activity, and guests who want to sit still will find little to do.

Arctic light as the season. Midnight sun in summer, northern lights in winter, and a long dark in between — the calendar governs everything.

Who it is not for

Naustholmen is wrong for guests wanting comfort, service and warmth. It is wrong for travellers who do not intend to be active, since the programme is the property. And it is wrong for those who need fixed dates, as weather governs the crossing. And it is wrong for guests who want privacy, since scheduled weeks mix unrelated parties. Those wanting an Arctic island without the programme should look at The Arctic Hideaway.
