A coral cay at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, with manta rays year-round.
Lady Elliot is a small coral cay at the southernmost point of the Great Barrier Reef, reached only by light aircraft to its own grass strip. The cay sits inside a Green Zone — the highest level of marine park protection — and manta rays are present year-round rather than seasonally, which is true of almost nowhere else on the reef. The island also receives day visitors who fly in and out, which places it at P1 and in the Extended Index.
Around forty-one rooms of simple standard make up the accommodation, run as an eco resort: the island is powered largely by solar, and a long revegetation programme has brought the cay back from the guano mining that stripped it in the nineteenth century.
Mantas every month of the year. The reason divers choose Lady Elliot over the rest of the southern reef, and it is a function of geography rather than of the property.

Who it is not for
Lady Elliot is wrong for guests expecting comfort or luxury — the accommodation is basic and the register says so plainly. It is wrong for travellers wanting privacy, since day visitors arrive by plane. And it is wrong for non-divers, as the reef is the whole proposition. Those wanting the reef with comfort should look at Lizard Island or Hayman.
