Amanpulo
Pamalican Island, its own reef, and an aircraft that only goes there.
Amanpulo occupies Pamalican in the Cuyo archipelago, between Palawan and Panay in the Philippines. The island is a little over two kilometres long, encircled by its own reef, and reached by the resort's aircraft from Manila — a flight that exists for this property and no other. One resort occupies the island. The reef around it has been under the resort's marine protection programme for decades, and turtles nest on the beaches.
Casitas stand along the beach and in the treeline, with larger villas on the hillside, and the island carries a spa, a dive centre, several restaurants and a beach club. It is small enough to cycle end to end in fifteen minutes and large enough to support a proper resort — the balance Aman found here in 1993 and has not changed since. It was the first Aman built on an island, and much of what the group later did elsewhere started on Pamalican.
The aircraft is the filter. Scheduled flights do not serve Pamalican. Arrival is by the resort's own plane, which sets the guest list and the rhythm of arrivals and departures.
The template for island Amans. Amanpulo established the model — low buildings under trees, no visible resort mass, a single island — that the group repeated across three decades.
Who it is not for
Amanpulo is wrong for travellers who want to arrive independently or extend a stay at short notice, since flights are the resort's own and finite. It is wrong for guests who want the theatrical architecture now common in the Maldives and Red Sea — Aman's restraint reads as plainness to some. And it is wrong for anyone hoping to combine the island with a wider Philippines trip easily; the routing runs through Manila each time. Those wanting drama should look at Shebara or JOALI.
