Alphonse Island
A coral island in the Seychelles outer islands, run around a fishing flat rather than a beach.
Alphonse lies about 400 kilometres south-west of Mahé, an hour by air, and belongs to the Seychelles outer islands — a different country in practice from the granite inner group. It is flat, low and coral, sitting beside the vast St François lagoon, which empties and fills across sand flats twice a day. One lodge occupies the island. The Islands Development Company controls what happens on the outer islands, and the conservation foundation on Alphonse works alongside the lodge rather than for it.
Twenty-two bungalows and five villas are run in lodge style — Blue Safari manages the fishing and diving, most of the property's power comes from solar, and the day is organised around tides rather than mealtimes. The flats fishery for bonefish, triggerfish and giant trevally is among the best documented in the world, run on catch-and-release with guides who work the same water year after year.
The tide sets the timetable. Guests here plan a day around when the flats are fishable, not around when the restaurant opens. Almost nothing else in this register works that way.
Data as a by-product. Tagging and catch records from the fishery feed a research programme, so the sport and the science on Alphonse are the same activity.
Who it is not for
Alphonse is wrong for guests with no interest in fishing or diving — a week here without either is a long week, and the property makes no attempt to fill it. It is wrong for travellers wanting the granite-and-jungle Seychelles of the postcards, which is a different archipelago entirely. And it is wrong for anyone who needs certainty in a schedule, since weather and tide routinely rearrange the day. Those wanting the outer islands with a resort behind them should look at Desroches.
