Island Resorts

A complete resort on an island of its own — restaurants, spa, dive centre, children's club.

A complete resort on an island of its own: restaurants in the plural, a spa, a dive centre, a children's club, and enough staff that nothing has to be arranged in advance. 65 records, and it is the broadest shelf in the register because it holds the arrangement most of the world means when it says private island — one operator, one island, a full hotel on it.

Breadth is the shelf's weakness as a category and the register does not hide it. Kandolhu at thirty villas and Soneva Fushi at sixty-three are different propositions sharing a word, and the filters exist for that reason: scale separates the boutique island from the grand one, and privacy level separates the island held outright from the island shared with a research station or a village. Reading the shelf alone will mislead; reading it with the axes will not.

The strongest entries here are the ones where the island's own condition, not the hotel's inventory, is the argument. Six Senses Laamu is the only resort in its atoll and three research organisations work from it. Vabbinfaru kept its accommodation on the sand while the country built jetties, and the reef in front of it is measurably better for it. Wakatobi pays surrounding villages an annual lease not to fish a reef its guests swim on.

Wrong for anyone who wants the island to themselves: these are hotels, with other guests, service schedules and a reception. Entire Island exists for the other appetite.
