Orpheus Island Lodge

Fourteen rooms on a Great Barrier Reef national park island, with a research station at the far end.

Full entry · sources recorded · verification stamp pending

Orpheus lies in the Palm Islands off Townsville in Queensland, reached by helicopter or boat, and is a national park island of about 1,300 hectares with fringing reef in the bays. The lodge occupies one bay; a James Cook University research station operates at another, which places the island at P2 rather than P4 in this register. Pelorus, under the same ownership, lies 800 metres north.

Fourteen rooms and suites make up the property, adults only, run all-inclusive by the Morris Group. The reef starts at the beach in several of the bays, and guests take a dinghy out unaccompanied to a private beach with a picnic — the arrangement the group also uses at Pelorus.

A reef you enter from the sand. Fringing reef in the bays removes the boat from the day, which is unusual on the Great Barrier Reef.

A research station on the same island. James Cook University's presence means the reefs here are studied continuously and the briefings reflect it.

Who it is not for

Orpheus is wrong for families, since the lodge takes adults only. It is wrong for guests expecting an island to themselves, given the research station and the national park. And it is wrong for those wanting evening life beyond dinner. Families should look at Lizard Island; those wanting a reef island held outright should look at Pelorus, under the same ownership 800 metres north.
