Amilla Maldives
A large jungle island in Baa Atoll where a third of the accommodation is privately styled residences.
Amilla occupies Finolhu Villingili in Baa Atoll, inside the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, reached by seaplane or by domestic flight and boat. The island is unusually large and densely wooded for the Maldives, with a village-like plan: paths through jungle, a shop, a bakery and a wellness centre spread out rather than lined along a beach.
Sixty-seven villas and residences make up the property, and the residences — four to eight bedrooms, with their own staff — are what places this entry among the societies rather than the resorts. The mix means a guest may share the island with families occupying what amount to private houses. There is a large children's programme, several restaurants and a hydroponic garden.

Who it is not for
Amilla is wrong for couples seeking quiet: it is a family island with children in numbers and a busy programme. It is wrong for travellers who want a compact island they can learn in a day, since this one needs a bicycle. And it is wrong for those expecting the uniformity of a single-brand resort, because the residences operate on their own terms. Couples should look at Huvafen Fushi or The Nautilus.
