Huvafen Fushi
Two treatment rooms six metres under the lagoon, on an island a guest can walk around in a quarter of an hour.
Huvafen Fushi sits in North Malé Atoll, thirty minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport, twenty-six kilometres away. The island measures roughly 350 by 150 metres and the operator states it can be walked around in ten to fifteen minutes. One resort occupies it; there is no village and no second operator. The name means dream island in Dhivehi. The resort opened in July 2004.
Forty-six bungalows and pavilions, beach and overwater, from one-bedroom to a three-bedroom beach pavilion. The property is owned by Universal Resorts and sold and marketed by The Small Maldives Island Co; it traded for years under the PER AQUUM name before returning to a Universal-exclusive portfolio, the date of which we have not confirmed. Villa interiors and the spa were reworked in 2018. Buyout is not advertised.
Two treatment rooms, six metres down. The spa's underwater rooms opened with the resort in 2004 and sit six metres below the surface. The operator calls them the world's first underwater spa; a 2013 report in New Atlas, independently of the resort, called it the world's only submarine spa. The register has found no earlier example and no competing claim.
Small enough to learn. At 350 by 150 metres the island is among the more compact in the atoll, and the whole property is within a quarter-hour walk of itself — the opposite of the multi-island resorts that came later.
Who it is not for
Huvafen Fushi is wrong for a guest who wants distance from other resorts: North Malé is the most densely developed atoll in the country and the transfer is a half-hour speedboat, not a seaplane into emptiness. It is wrong for anyone who wants ground to cover — 350 by 150 metres is walked in a quarter of an hour, and there is no interior to explore. And it is wrong for a party wanting the whole island, since buyout is not advertised here.
