Huvafen Fushi
The island that put a spa under the water and started the Maldivian design decade.
Huvafen Fushi sits in North Malé Atoll, a thirty-minute speedboat from the airport. One resort occupies the island, which is small and densely planted — the property is compact by Maldivian standards, and deliberately so. The name means dream island in Dhivehi, and the property opened in 2004 into a market that was still building thatched simplicity rather than design.
Forty-six villas, beach and overwater, are adult in atmosphere without being formally adults-only. The underwater spa treatment rooms — the first built in the Maldives — remain the property's signature, along with a wine cellar below ground and a long-standing wellness programme. Huvafen was among the first Maldivian resorts to be discussed as architecture rather than as a beach, and much of what followed in the country traces back to it.

Who it is not for
Huvafen Fushi is wrong for families with young children: the atmosphere, the layout and the programme are built for couples. It is wrong for guests who want space to walk and explore, since the island is small and quickly learned. And it is wrong for travellers seeking remoteness — the atoll is busy and neighbouring resorts are in sight. Families should look at Soneva Fushi; those wanting distance should look at Soneva Secret or Nujuma.
