JOALI Maldives
An island commissioned as an art project, where the installations came before the interiors.
JOALI Maldives occupies Muravandhoo in Raa Atoll, reached by seaplane. One resort occupies the island. It was built as an art-led property: artists were commissioned to make work for specific positions on the island and in the water before the interiors were finished, and the pieces are permanent rather than rotating.
Seventy-three villas, several restaurants and a substantial spa sit in a design language that is deliberately maximal where most Maldivian resorts are restrained — colour, pattern and craft rather than neutral timber. The manta sculpture in the lagoon and the treehouse suspended above the water are the best known of the commissions. The sister property JOALI BEING is nearby and takes the opposite approach.
Art was the brief, not the dressing. The commissions determined where buildings went. That order is rare enough that the island reads differently from every other resort in the atoll.
Craft over minimalism. Where the Maldivian default is grey timber and restraint, JOALI hired makers. Whether that is a strength depends entirely on the guest.
Who it is not for
JOALI is wrong for guests who prefer restraint — the design is emphatic and does not recede. It is wrong for travellers wanting a small, quiet island, since seventy-three villas and a full resort programme make for a busy property. And it is wrong for anyone who finds curated art in a hotel setting uncomfortable. Those wanting the same atoll with less noise should look at Soneva Fushi; those wanting discipline should look at JOALI BEING.
