Desroches is a coral island in the Amirantes group of the Seychelles outer islands, an hour by air from Mahé, with about fourteen kilometres of coastline and a single resort occupying it. The island is flat and long; bicycles are how most guests move. The Island Conservation Society runs a centre here, and the giant tortoise and turtle programmes on Desroches predate the current resort by years.
Seventy-one suites, villas and residences make this one of the larger properties in the outer islands, with several restaurants, a spa, a dive centre and a children's programme — a resort in the full sense, unusual this far out. The scale is what allows families to use an island that would otherwise be reachable only by specialists.
A remote island that works for families. Almost everything at this distance is a lodge for divers or fishermen. Desroches has a kids' club, several restaurants and a doctor, which changes who can go.
Conservation with continuity. The tortoise and turtle programmes have run through successive operators, so the science on the island is older than the hotel brand on the gate.
Who it is not for
Desroches is wrong for guests seeking a small hideaway: seventy-one keys and fourteen kilometres of coast make it a resort, and it feels like one. It is wrong for travellers who want the granite Seychelles of Praslin and La Digue, which is a different landscape and a different journey. And it is wrong for anyone unwilling to cycle or take a buggy everywhere. Those wanting the outer islands at lodge scale should look at Alphonse.
