Soneva Fushi
The island that invented barefoot luxury in 1995, and still runs the observatory to prove it.
Soneva Fushi occupies Kunfunadhoo in Baa Atoll, one of the largest islands in the Maldives — dense enough that villas are hidden in jungle and guests cycle along sand paths without seeing each other. One resort occupies it. Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and Hanifaru Bay, the manta and whale-shark aggregation, is within reach in season.
Sixty-three villas sit under trees rather than along a beach line. The island carries an observatory, an outdoor cinema, glass and ceramic studios, a waste-to-wealth centre that processes the great majority of what the island produces, waterslides and a serious children's programme. Founded in 1995, it created the no-news-no-shoes idea that the rest of the market later borrowed, and it has kept adding rather than polishing.
Waste as a visible operation. Guests are taken to see where the rubbish goes. Almost no property in this register invites that, and the practice predates the industry's interest in it by twenty years.
Jungle, not beachfront. Kunfunadhoo is big enough to hide sixty-three villas in vegetation, which produces a very different Maldives from the standard sandbank.
Who it is not for
Soneva Fushi is wrong for guests who want an overwater villa — this is a beach and jungle island, and the overwater experience is elsewhere in the group. It is wrong for travellers wanting a small, quiet property, since the island is large, busy with families and full of things to do. And it is wrong for anyone who wants formality; the barefoot rule is real. Those wanting overwater should look at Soneva Jani; those wanting quiet should look at Soneva Secret.
