Forty-four hectares of island, augmented into shape, with twelve beaches along six kilometres of coast.
Reethi Rah occupies a 44-hectare island in North Malé Atoll — about 109 acres — with roughly six kilometres of coastline divided into twelve beaches. One resort occupies it. The island was augmented during construction rather than built on as found: its present shape is engineered, a fact reported by Forbes Travel Guide and not disputed by the operator. Arrival is by the resort's 56-foot yacht, about forty-five minutes, or by seaplane in fifteen to twenty.
Villa categories run from one-bedroom beach and water villas to a three-bedroom sunset residence, eleven categories in all. Bicycles are the standard way to move between them. The resort runs KidsOnly for children and One Tribe for teenagers; neither the operator nor the register states the ages each serves. The brand is One&Only, part of Kerzner International. Buyout is not advertised.
Twelve beaches along six kilometres. A natural island of this size would carry one perimeter beach; the augmented coastline carries twelve, which is what separates the villas from one another. The comparison Forbes draws is to Dubai's palm islands.
The operator publishes no room count. One&Only lists eleven villa categories and no total. Two independent listings — the Michelin Guide and a Maldives trade register — both give 118, and that is the figure carried here.
Who it is not for
Reethi Rah is wrong for a guest who wants to be on foot: six kilometres of coastline and forty-four hectares are covered by bicycle or buggy, not by walking to dinner. It is wrong for anyone who wants a natural island, since this one was reshaped to make its beaches. And it is wrong for a party wanting the island to itself, since buyout is not advertised. For an island small enough to walk, look at The Nautilus; for one left as it was found, Soneva Fushi; for a whole island, the Entire Island collection.
