One&Only Reethi Rah
A large island reshaped to hold twelve beaches, and one of the biggest resorts in this register.
Reethi Rah occupies a large island in North Malé Atoll, reached by yacht or seaplane. One resort occupies it. The island was deliberately reshaped during construction: its coastline was extended and cut into a series of separate bays so that the property would have twelve beaches rather than one perimeter. It is among the largest resort islands in the Maldives and takes about forty minutes to walk end to end.
One hundred and twenty villas are spread widely enough that bicycles are the standard transport, with several restaurants, a large spa, tennis courts and a strong family programme. The scale is the proposition: this is a resort island rather than a hideaway, and the property does not pretend otherwise.
Twelve beaches by construction. The coastline was engineered to give villas privacy that the natural island shape would not have allowed — an approach visible from the air and rarely discussed on the ground.
Space as the luxury. At 120 villas the island still feels uncrowded, because the ground was bought and built to make that arithmetic work.
Who it is not for
Reethi Rah is wrong for guests who want intimacy or to be known by name — the property is large and staffed accordingly. It is wrong for travellers who dislike cycling or waiting for a buggy every time they move. And it is wrong for those seeking a remote atoll, since North Malé is busy and close to the airport.
