Patina Maldives, Fari Islands
A design island inside a built archipelago, with a marina village shared with its neighbour.
Patina occupies one island of the Fari Islands archipelago in North Malé Atoll, reached by speedboat or seaplane. The archipelago was masterplanned as a group: Patina sits alongside The Ritz-Carlton Maldives and the Fari Marina Village, a quay of shops, restaurants and a beach club that serves both hotels. Guests therefore share the archipelago with another resort's guests, which is why this register keeps the parent record above it.
Around 110 villas and studios hold the property, designed by the Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan in concrete, timber and glass — a deliberate departure from Maldivian thatch. The programming leans on art, music and wellbeing, and the property has built a reputation for its residencies and festivals rather than for seclusion.
Architecture instead of thatch. Kogan's concrete and line work is the most emphatic rejection of the Maldivian vernacular in this register, and it is the reason to come or to stay away.
A neighbour across the water. Fari is a village of resorts. That is the design intent, not a flaw, but it is the opposite of what most people mean by a private island.
Who it is not for
Patina is wrong for guests seeking seclusion, since the marina village and the neighbouring resort are part of the plan. It is wrong for travellers who want traditional Maldivian design and materials. And it is wrong for those wanting quiet, given the programming. Those wanting genuine privacy in North Malé should look at Coco Privé Kuda Hithi, which takes one party at a time, or Gili Lankanfushi.
