Island Worlds

A hundred keys or more on a single island, large enough that guests move by bicycle.

A hundred keys or more on a single island, large enough that guests move by bicycle and a walk to dinner is a decision. 18 records. The shelf exists because scale changes the product completely: at this size an island can carry eleven restaurants, a working farm, an observatory, a marine research centre and a children's club with a teenagers' annexe, and it needs all of them to occupy the number of people staying.

What is bought here is capability rather than solitude. Landaa Giraavaru runs one of the longest manta research programmes in the Indian Ocean because ninety-six villas can fund it. Laucala grows and rears most of what it serves because twenty-five villas on three thousand acres leave room for a farm. Conrad Rangali built the first undersea restaurant in the world and fills it because it has the guests to. None of that is possible at eleven villas.

The cost is equally plain. Other guests are present and visible, the beach is shared, the restaurants take bookings, and the sense of having arrived somewhere nobody else has is not on offer. Islands at this scale are also the ones most likely to be reshaped: several here are engineered ground rather than natural land, and the register says so on the record.

Wrong for travellers who came for emptiness. Little Paradises and Entire Island answer that; this shelf answers the opposite question, which is what a family of nine actually does for a week.
