Tavarua Island Resort
A heart-shaped Fijian island that exists for two of the world's best surf breaks.
Tavarua is a small heart-shaped island off Nadi in Fiji, reached by boat, ringed by reef and surrounded by open ocean swell. One property occupies it. The island's reason for existing as a resort is two waves: Cloudbreak, a reef pass break regarded among the finest left-handers anywhere, and Restaurants, closer in and shallower.
Sixteen bures make up the accommodation, run all-inclusive with boats running to the breaks through the day. For decades the resort held exclusive access to Cloudbreak; Fijian law opened the breaks to all in 2010, which changed the property's proposition and is worth knowing.

Who it is not for
Tavarua is wrong for non-surfers, since the entire operation is built around the breaks. It is wrong for guests wanting comfort, design or a spa. And it is wrong for families outside the quieter seasons. And it is wrong for travellers who want a quiet island, since the property is loud, communal and organised around the swell forecast. Those wanting Fiji without surf should look at Vomo or Turtle Island.
