Misool Resort
Twenty cottages on a Raja Ampat island, inside a no-take zone the resort created itself.
Misool sits in the southern Raja Ampat archipelago in eastern Indonesia, roughly four hours by boat from Sorong, in the heart of the Coral Triangle. The resort occupies a small island in a lagoon among limestone karsts. What surrounds it matters more than what is on it: the owners leased the surrounding water and established a no-take zone that has grown to a large marine reserve, patrolled by their own rangers, with fish biomass measurably higher inside it than outside.
Twenty cottages, most over water, are built from reclaimed timber and hold a maximum of around forty guests. The property runs a conservation foundation alongside the resort, and a majority of guests are returning divers. Diving is the structure of the day; the house reef is reached from the jetty and the wider reserve by boat.
The reserve is the product. Misool did not open beside a protected area — it created one, and the diving that guests pay for is the direct result of two decades of patrol.

Who it is not for
Misool is wrong for non-divers: the reef is the entire proposition and there is little else to fill a week. It is wrong for travellers who need reliable connectivity, air conditioning everywhere or a short journey — Sorong is two flights from most places and the boat is four hours. And it is wrong for guests expecting polish; the buildings are handmade and deliberately rough. Those wanting Indonesian water with a resort behind it should look at Bawah Reserve.
