Turtle Island Fiji

Turtle Island — Nanuya Levu — lies in the Yasawa group of Fiji, reached by seaplane from Nadi. One property occupies the island, and its beaches are for its guests alone. The island was bought in a degraded state and replanted with hundreds of thousands of trees over decades; the surrounding lagoon is where the 1980 film The Blue Lagoon was shot, which is how most people first heard of it.

Fourteen bures hold fourteen couples for most of the year, with designated family weeks as the exception. Each day a couple can be dropped at a private beach with a picnic and collected later. The stay is all-inclusive, and dinner is communal at a long table unless guests ask otherwise — the property's social model is as fixed as its capacity.

Reforestation over four decades. The island's forest was planted by the owner and staff, and the Yasawa community programmes — clinics, schooling — grew out of the same effort.
