Matangi Private Island Resort

A horseshoe-shaped volcanic crater in Fiji, adults only, with treehouses in the forest.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Matangi lies in the Vanua Levu group of northern Fiji, reached by flight to Taveuni and then boat, and is a horseshoe — the rim of a sunken volcanic crater, with a submerged bay in the middle and forest over the ridge. One property occupies it and takes adults only. The Somosomo Strait, one of Fiji's best-known dive corridors, is nearby.

Twelve bures make up the accommodation, including treehouses built into the canopy, run by the family that has owned the island for generations — it was a copra plantation before it was a resort. Horseshoe Bay on the outer side is reachable only by boat and is used for private beach days.

A crater rim rather than a beach island. The shape produces a sheltered bay inside and a wild coast outside, which is unusual anywhere.

Family-owned since the plantation. Continuity of ownership across generations, and the copra history is visible in the planting.

Who it is not for

Matangi is wrong for families, since the resort takes adults only. It is wrong for travellers wanting a large beach, as the island's are small and reached by boat. And it is wrong for those who need a short journey, given the connection through Taveuni. And it is wrong for guests with limited mobility, since the terrain is steep and the paths uneven. Families should look at Kokomo; those wanting scale should look at Vomo.
