Royal Davui Island

A Fijian island of sixteen villas, adults only, above the Beqa Lagoon.

Full entry · sources recorded · verification stamp pending

Royal Davui occupies Ngasi Makathuva, a small island in the Beqa Lagoon south of Viti Levu, reached by boat from Pacific Harbour. The island is steep and wooded, rising out of one of the largest barrier reef lagoons in the world. One property occupies it and takes adults only.

Sixteen villas are built into the hillside, each with a plunge pool and a view over the lagoon, reached by steps rather than paths. Beqa Lagoon's diving — soft coral, and the shark dive at Pacific Harbour — is the surrounding attraction. The property is small, quiet and deliberately without a programme.

Built up a hillside, not along a beach. The villas stack rather than spread, which produces privacy and a great many steps.

Beqa Lagoon at the door. One of the world's largest barrier lagoons, with soft coral diving that Fiji built its reputation on.

Who it is not for

Royal Davui is wrong for families, since the property takes adults only. It is wrong for guests with limited mobility, given the steps. And it is wrong for travellers wanting a long beach, which the island does not have. And it is wrong for guests who want a dive centre and full activities desk on the island. Families should look at Kokomo or Vomo; those wanting flat ground should look at Turtle Island.
