Peter Island Resort
A 1,800-acre British Virgin Island reopened after Irma, with five beaches and one resort.
Peter Island lies across the Sir Francis Drake Channel from Tortola, reached by the resort's own ferry, and covers about 1,800 acres of hill, bay and beach — one of the largest privately held islands in the British Virgin Islands. One resort occupies it. Deadman's Bay, the island's main beach, runs for most of a mile and faces the channel.
The resort was flattened by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and stayed closed for years before reopening in phases with around fifty rooms and villas. What exists now is new construction on an old footprint, engineered for the storm risk. The scale of the island means most of it remains undeveloped hillside with hiking trails and empty bays.
Eighteen hundred acres and fifty rooms. The ratio is among the lowest in the Caribbean and the reason the island's other beaches are usually empty.
A five-year closure. Irma's damage kept the resort shut long enough that its reopening is effectively a new property with an old name.
Who it is not for
Peter Island is wrong for guests booking on the strength of older reviews, which describe the pre-Irma hotel. It is wrong for travellers wanting a compact walkable island, since this one needs vehicles. And it is wrong for those seeking the intimacy of a small property. And it is wrong for guests who need a short transfer, since the ferry runs to a schedule. Those wanting the BVI at small scale should look at Guana Island or Moskito.
